Wednesday night's School District of Washington Board meeting was moved to Washington West High School where over 80 citizens, faculty and staff attended to hear Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer present a proposed set of "Phase II" cuts.  Among the proposals were reductions in staffing, operational changes, and program cuts.

Proposed operational changes included freezing district vehicle purchases as well as modifying the distance a student must live from their school to be eligible for bus transportation.  Currently, transportation is available to students that live at least one mile from their school.  A proposed change would allow only those students living at least 1.25 miles from the school to be eligible for transportation.  According to VanLeer, that change would save the district $243,000 annually and would affect 917 students.

Proposed program cuts include eliminating the fifth and sixth grade after-school orchestra program and reducing the district's budget for the Parents as Teachers program by 50%.

A full list of proposed phase two cuts is expected later on Thursday.
