Dr. Bret Riegel Named Emergency Department Medical Director

Bret RiegelBret Riegel, MD, has been named medical director of the St. John's Mercy Hospital Emergency Department.

Dr. Riegel, a Washington resident, began working at St. John's Mercy Hospital in 2007.

"I've enjoyed working here and I’m both honored and energized to lead the department," Dr. Riegel said. "This is an exciting time for the department as we continually grow with medical advances and simultaneously look to how we can meet the changing needs of the communities we serve."

Dr. Riegel is board certified in emergency medicine and brings with him more than a decade of experience in emergency medicine. He worked for the Emergency Physicians of Springfield, Mo., where he served as president. He also worked in emergency services in Louisville, Ky. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Louisville and earned his medical degree at St. Louis University School of Medicine.

Dr. Riegel replaces Dr. Garry Scarato, who stepped down to spend more time with his family. Dr. Scarato served patients at St. John's Mercy Hospital at two different times starting in 1978. He served as director of the emergency department at two different times as well, once from 1985 to 1991 and again starting in 2006. Dr. Scarato will assist in the transition of leadership and will continue to work full time in the department.
